Van Rijn Electric Ltd. Was founded in February of 1986 by Hank and Jack Van Rijn after their previous employer closed operations due to financial reasons.
The company began with their shop being located 2 miles west and 1½ miles north of Coaldale on Hank's farm working out of a double car garage and the office being handled out of Jack's home in Coaldale. Van Rijn Electric's 1st job was renovating the restaurant known today as the "The Keg" in Lethbridge.
Hank & Jack, due mainly to the connections they made during their years of service with their former employer were able to regain most of the customer base. These customers returned because of the dedication and quality workmanship that Hank & Jack showed in their work which has followed them to this day.
In 2007 Van Rijn Electric moved into their newly renovated shop which is located at #1431 1907 13th St. in Coaldale, Alberta approximately 2 hours south of Calgary, or 10 minutes east of Lethbridge. Coaldale is located in the heart of the livestock feeding country, where 64% of all Canada’s beef cattle are produced. With a new 5000 Sq. Ft. Shop, Van Rijn Electric had a central location from which to run their day to day operations, which covers the entire southern portion of Alberta.
Van Rijn Electric Ltd. Currently has 15 employees including 6 Journeymen Electricians, 1 Master Electrician, 4 Apprentice Electricians and related office staff as well as seasonal staff.
In the more than 22 years of operation, Van Rijn Electric has been a very active as a contractor in the agricultural, commercial, residential, industrial, and institutional sectors while specializing in the area of electrical for irrigation.
In 1997 Van Rijn Electric became C.S.A. Certified and now manufacture a wide range of Industrial Control Equipment including C.I.P. Irrigation Control Panels, Constant Pressure Control Panels as well as Automated Control Panels for Feed System Facilities and Irrigation.

Hank Van Rijn, PresidentHank Van Rijn began his working career at York Farms (now Maple Leaf Foods ) in 1967 where he worked his way up to maintenance and production foreman. In the fall of 1972 he began apprenticing with Bill's Electric in Coaldale. He finished his apprenticeship with C&A Electric where he remained until their closing in 1986. In February of 1986 Hank and Jack started Van Rijn Electric.
While earning his journeyman certificate Hank received awards for achieving the highest marks in Southern Alberta for two out of the four years of his apprenticeship. Hank currently holds a Master's Certificate in the electrical trade which he achieved in 1983. He has continued his education and became a safety codes officer in the electrical discipline in 1996.
Hank has extensive knowledge of many aspects of the electrical trade and currently spends most of his time engineering jobs, dispatching employees, and building control panels.
Hank, his wife Shari and their kids live on a farm northwest of Coaldale along with an assortment of dogs, cats, cattle and horses. Hank's spare time is devoted to farming, hunting, fishing and hiking in the coulees.
Jack Van Rijn, Vice President / Secretary Treasurer
Jack holds a Journeyman certificate as an Electrician graduating from Southern Alberta Institute of Technology in 1979. Jack started his career working for Bill’s Electric in Coaldale and then with C&A Electrical in Lethbridge until there closing in 1986. Jack has worked in every sector of the electrical industry during his career and presently looks after the front office and estimating duties.
Outside the company, Jack serves on the board of various service organizations including:
- Past President for the Coaldale & District Chamber of Commerce.
- Past President for the Kinsmen Club of Coaldale.
- Director for the Coaldale & District Agricultural Society.
- Deputy Fire Chief for Coaldale & District Emergency Services where he has been a member for 27 years.
- Emergency Medical Technician for Coaldale & District Emergency Services.
- Safety Codes Officer in the Fire Discipline for the Town of Coaldale.
